Mind Freedom Kenya (MF-K)
"Mind Kenya, Mind Africa"

Programs and Services

MindFreedom Kenya is sourcing for funds to start projects that will alleviate poverty amongst users and survivors who are marginalized such as (MindCleaners Laundry mart, MindCrafts, outreach(MindOutreach) etc with users and survivors taking a bigger stake in running the sustainable activities using a 80/20 approach (80% users and survivors, 20% professional support).

MindFreedom Kenya is pioneering research based projects to challenge the notion of Professional oversight required otherwise; which implies that the users have no confidence in their own abilities, agreeing to the framework put in place by the MH systems in Kenya which says that there is this burden of mental illness (I prefer psychosocial disability rather than mental illness) and that mental (psychosocial) patients are lost causes.

MindFreedom Kenya hopes to reverse these attitudes within the MH system here in Kenya and Africa.

The key strategy for programs and services is to increase access to alternative treatment care, peer support for users and survivors will include the following:

  • Enactment and enforcement of laws and legislations that will empower the users and survivors to access treatment or alternative treatments, care and support without violating their human rights.
  • Formulating and implementing policies and programmes that enhance users and survivors access to financial, technical and appropriate infrastructures and technologies that enhance and promote household food security.
  • Design special economic schemes for users and survivors of the mental health system taking into account the multiple responsibilities of rehabilitation back to society.
  • Develop a progressive and modern legislation to protect and promote human rights for persons with psychosocial disabilities.
  • Develop a mental health policy and strategic plan which sets out a clear vision and concrete strategies to improve mental health and to coordinate the above actions.
  • To promote access to treatment and stop social seclusion and dissemination of information to educate the public.
  • Assessment and screening of addictions(substance and alcohol abuse).
  • Community outreach interventions.
  • Addiction education and trainings.
  • Employee assistance programs (EAP).
